Kavana graduated from Cal Poly SLO with a B.S. in Biological Sciences while concentrating in Molecular and Cellular Biology and minoring in Ethics, Public Policy, Science, and Technology (EPPST). They received their M.S. in Molecular Biology from San Diego State University and are now pursuing a Ph.D. in the SDSU/UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Cell and Molecular Biology.
Kavana’s passions are interdisciplinary in nature. They are interested in the two-way interaction between genotype and phenotype, involving gene expression, regulation, and the complex interplay of epigenetic factors. As a queer, neurodivergent person of color, Kavana is also fascinated by the ways in which phenotype and the environment interact, including the social, ethical, and justice-related implications.
Kavana has been actively involved in molecular biology research, including presenting at conferences and creating posters on the topic. They have also been involved in creating resources and leading projects educating the broader STEM community on the importance of the intersection between DEI (specifically in relation to sex and gender identity) and STEM. Kavana’s aim is to conduct research and teach genetics at the post-secondary level, focusing on the intersection of genetics and identity, and their relevance to the STEM field.
